Gold Coast resident, Mike Summers has had an interesting life, including an extended period as a modern-day Robinson Crusoe. He worked for more than fourteen years in the Island Resorts of Australia's Great Barrier Reef and his skill with a shaker became as legendary as the cocktails he created there.
A camping holiday on Hinchinbrook Island was unexpectedly extended from one week to two months. The island is approximately 36 kilometres long and 22 kilometres wide. A boat
dropped him off at a place called Zoe Bay, which is on the south-eastern part of Hinchinbrook. He had organised the boat to return a week later. What happened next was not planned.
The mosquitoes and sand-flies were so bad that Mike decided to move closer to the waterfall at Zoe Bay. Suddenly, a massive storm hit and Mike could not get back to the beach for the pick-up. The pick-up person thought that Mike had gone, and left without him. Two months later, Mike was still living at Zoe Bay. He survived on fresh fish, caught daily, and coconuts. He had to leave his fire burning 24/7 just in case he ran out of matches.
It was during this time that Mike decided to publish his cocktail recipes. When he finally got to the mainland, he typed them out and gave the list to a few of his closest friends. Then as the years past, Mike lost his own copy. The book forgotten, he worked for a very large telco for the next 16 years. A couple of years ago, he decided to follow-up on the cocktail book. He was lucky one of his friends still had the list.
He approached Morris Publishing Australia with the idea and they picked it up. Now his cocktails will be available for all to enjoy. The book is available from the website now and will be in bookstores and other outlets in a soft and hard cover version in late November.
